That was when the politically conservative Liberal Party of Prime Minister John Howard pushed through an amendment to the Marriage Act declaring the civil institution to be exclusively heterosexual. Efforts to overturn that law in Parliament subsequently failed 22 times. But even before 2017, public opinion polls consistently favored marriage equality. Still, the administration of then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull opted for a mail-in survey on the issue …
